Our Journey of Service: A Legacy of Health and Commitment
Building a Tradition of Care
Sri Sumangala College Old Boys' Medical Association was established on 27th of February 2011, with the noble concept of serving the Alma Mater.
Since the inception in 2011, we worked together with the parent body of Sri Sumangala College Old Boys' Association. President of Sri Sumangala College Old Boys' Association, at the time of establishment, Mr. Vijith Salgado, extended his unstinted support in laying the foundation for the new up and coming branch.
Mr. Sarath Rodrigo, distinguished past president of Sri Sumangala College Old Boys' Association, was a tower of strength to us in bringing together the medical professionals, by providing us with the carefully kept registers of the Old boys who were serving the health sector here and abroad.
The principal of the school, Mr. L. W. Somathilaka, extended his wholehearted support to put us on strong footing. He provided us with a space to conduct a medical clinic within the school premises.
Further to that, he assigned a dedicated teacher (Mr. Malalasekera/Mr. Bamunusinghe) to help us in running the clinic. This medical clinic was started on the 2nd of December 2011.
In 2015, our clinic was shifted to the new building complex "Suwapiyasaya." This building complex was the brainchild of Mr. Sanath de Silva, who was the president of Srisumangala College Old Boys' Association at the time. Initially, the brunt of funding the project had been borne by our distinguished old boy Mr. Ranjan Dantanarayana.
He had donated two million rupees for the construction of the building. Finally, for the completion of the building complex, financial assistance of one million rupees had been donated by Mr. Rohantha Fonseka. In 2015, the building was handed over to the principal by the president of the "Old Sumangalians' Green School Association", Mr. Sarath Wijendra. We were invited to occupy the fully facilitated ground floor of the building while the dental unit of the school was shifted to the first floor.
Since the day of occupying "Suwapiyasa" we employed a paid, qualified nurse in the clinic. Until 2019 the clinic was attended by a medical officer on every school day.
As an association, we paid special attention to the past teachers of the school. Our members conducted a special clinic for past teachers once in three months.
From the beginning, we had a very cordial relationship with the "Sri Sumangala College Junior Old Boys Association."
The annual health camp that had been organized by the Junior Old Boys, for many years, was taken over by us in 2011.
From 2011 to 2018, we organized and conducted the health camp in collaboration with the "Junior Old Boys' Association." This annual health camp served the staff, past teachers, students, parents, Old Boys, and the community around the school. The health camp encompassed a comprehensive plan including registration, OPD, specialist clinics, health screening, laboratory, eye clinic, specialist Ayurvedic clinic, physiotherapy, and pharmacy.
Whenever the principal and the staff requested our services in school events such as sports meets and scouting camps, our members promptly did the needful.
The generations of Sumangalians who qualified to enter the medical faculties, each year, from 2012 to 2018, were given a cash donation of twenty-five thousand rupees each for their preliminary expenses.
Past president of Sri Sumangala College Old Boys' Association, Mr. Sarath Rodrigo, sponsored a medical student who was in need, from the 1st year until he passed out from the medical faculty. He provided him with a laptop in addition to the financial assistance.
On several occasions, we donated medical textbooks to the medical students who entered the medical faculties from our school.
The Easter bombing and the Covid-19 pandemic brought our activity to a halt for almost three years from 2019 to 2022.
We are glad to announce the recommencement of our activity from 2022.
We had the last annual general meeting in 2022.
Dr. Deepal Fernando, the outgoing president, during his tenure (2019-2022), proposed that
we establish a fund of four million rupees to meet the expenses of running the medical clinic and maintenance of "Suwapiyasa" building complex.
New President, Dr. B. Dayanath, promptly attended to the matter and was able to establish a fund for one million rupees in 2023, with the generous contribution of our members.
The interest generated from this deposit is nearly sufficient for the purpose.
Up to date, the salary of the nurse and maintenance cost of the building are borne by the members of the association.
In order to overcome this situation, we are firmly committed to expanding the fund to the original amount of four million rupees, with the help of well-wishers.
Even though our financial situation was not healthy, we had to attend to the repairs and the painting of the "Suwapiyasa" building complex. We invited the Old Sumangaliens' Union to include our building complex in their project of painting the school buildings. We spent two hundred thousand rupees to purchase paint for the exterior of the building.
Our member and the patron, Dr. Mangala Dissanayaka, facilitated the event
by buying paint for the interior of the building.
Old Sumangaliens' Union completed the project in February 2024.
High-quality workmanship and the advanced technology deployed by "OMU" brought glamour back to our building.
